Jobriath – Jobriath – Elektra – 1973

Bowie. Bolan. The Dolls. These are the names that we have hallowed through the decades as bastions of glam rock, the genre that defined the early ‘70s urban rock scene. Simultaneously swirling around the glam galaxy was a soft-spoken, fair-featured piano prodigy who called himself Jobriath, and though he is less featured in the annals of music history, his influence is no less felt by generations of flamboyant, theatrical rock performers who came after him.

Often cited as the first openly gay rock star, Jobriath rocketed from musical theatre actor and folk songwriter to full-on glam star in seemingly no time at all, thanks to aggressive marketing strategies from his Svengali-like manager, Jerry Brandt. Jobriath burned hot and bright for a few years, but his star fell just as quickly as it rose, and he spent the remainder of his days living out of the pyramid apartment on the roof of the Chelsea Hotel before his premature death in 1983. 

In this episode, we unpack the many ways Jobriath’s story — though shorter than his glam peers — has volumes to teaches us about the genre, changing social norms between the last decades of the 20th century and now, gender and sexuality, and why in the hell someone would even want to be famous in the first place.

    • Like, seriously, we’re only now starting to seriously talk about gender and toxic masculinity and just now see more inclusivity for pop stars challenging gender norms. Shouts to Jobriath for bringing this up decades ago.

  1. Wow, what a great commentary on Jobriath, I think it’s my favorite thing ever said about him. If I might add a few notes. His album track is not “I’m a Man” but “I’maman.” An earlier version (available as a demo on the recent “As the River Flows” release) was called “I’m a Man” (as may recall “I’m a Man” by Bo Diddley). But “I’maman” is tricker. ‘Maman’ is the French word for mother, and seems also to have been slang for ‘cocksucker’. Jobriath is saying he’s both himself and the mother, with the gay twist. I’ve wondered if the Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” is also suggested- “I’m a man with wealth and taste…”

    I guess my view is that Jobriath thinks of himself as being, not gay exactly, but double-gendered. He often did drag and apparently could pass. “Dietrich/Fondyke” (off his second album) is a pointer here: he pairs male and female movie star names, i.e. ‘Clark Grable’. And “Morning Star Ship” strikes me as a kind of Freudian dream of the feminine taking her place at the helm with him. His ship flies with two pilots.

    Both he and Bowie would be working off shared Sci-Fi references, from “2001: a space odyssey” to Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land” also about an alien coming to earth. Jerry Brandt had optioned the novel and tried to make a movie of it in 1968, and I suspect had conceived the idea of a post-Jagger sci-fi musical act in 1971. Jobriath was then tasked with writing Jerry’s conception, and did “Space Clown” as a portrait of Jerry.

    In the first, autobiographical draft of his musical “Popstar” Jobriath goes on and on about never having wanted to be famous, but rather to make good music.

    I have wondered if he felt responsible to articulate a new idea of detoxified masculinity in opposition to Bowie, who is never described as other than highly competitive, ruthless with perceived foes, Jobriath among them.
